Tampa Day 3

Another early start to the day - and 8:00 game against Velocity. You could say there is a little bit of a rivalry between the Bats and Velocity - so losing this game was unfortunate.

So what did the loss mean? At 11:45 we got to play... wait for it... Tampa Tribe. Enough. The Bats had a great game and made up for the loss yesterday... and then some.

This game was bittersweet - thanks to Wayne Herner and Phil Fackler for giving so much of their time and resources to the team. For giving a group of boys from Kentucky (and Indiana) a chance to play lacrosse on a different level... and to Pete Schroeder all of his travels with the team as well as a coach and mentor.

The upside? Getting to see so many younger players step in - and up - when needed.... hope they continue wearing the Bat uniform -

It was a beautiful day - and the Bats started out by winning the first game. Undefeated in 2011... until the second game. The third? Well - would you believe we had to play Tampa Tribe AND that it went into overtime. Not deja vu all over again? Well last year it went into double overtime and we won. This year the Bats lost -

What a great day - weather-wise.... much better than last year. The Bats played hard against 2 really good teams - what a great experience for the boys to play at this level - thanks to the parents, managers and coach for providing the opportunity.

Maryland Day 2

Congratulations to the boys on a great 2 days of play in Maryland... play was hard and aggressive and many of them are going to be sore today. We were low on numbers compared to our competition, but the Bats stayed right in there. Thanks also to the boys that stepped in and played different positions. Definitely bittersweet to notice the very obvious roster transition - where new Bats outnumbered the Maryland 2009 veterans... but how exciting to see a whole new group stand up and 'be a Bat"!

Addison Sears "Player", 2011, Manual HS, this 6'3'' 230 beast of a goalie has very quick hands and can really clear the ball. He is a DI prospect for sure. He needs to be tested at the next level but he has the big body and quick hands that coaches love.

Austin Fackler, "Watchlist" Trinity/Bluegrass Bats. 2011, Defense, Righty. Physical takeaway defenseman, as well as a good stickhandler. Salisbury commit.

Hayden Holbrook, "Watchlist" St Xavier/Bluegrass Bats, 2011, Middie, Lefty. Can get his own shot with good speed & is improving as a finisher.

Matt Herner, "Watchlist" Trinity/Bluegrass Bats, 2011, Middie, Righty. Uses a good change of direction to both finish & set up his teammates. Could be an attackman at the next level.

Gait Cup - Day 3... Final Game

Due to an anomaly in the brackets, the losing team of the Bats/Black Jacks game had to turn around and play again.... literally and figuratively. The Bats had no time before they turned around and played on Field 8 after losing a close game on Field 7. Too hot, a team short on numbers... unbelievable.
...but what a way to end the tournament.... these Bats played hard and never gave up to win the game against one of the Possums.

Game 1
This was a really long day for so many reasons. The first game at 10 was back on the turf field and it was already blistering that early in the morning. For whatever reason the ball wouldn't go in the goal when the Bats played on that field the day before - and they had the same trouble in this game. Tough loss in Game 5 against FCA South -

Game 2
FCA East was ahead and the Bats scored 4 quick ones but just needed a little more time - another loss for the day...

Game 3
This was a great game against Black Jacks -0-0 at the half, and 4-3 at the end of the game. Unfortunately the Bats were down.

How hot was it? Hot enough to melt the cups on the table -

Deja vu all over again... just like last year it was hot, hot, hot and we were playing the final game against Velocity. And just like last year we had lost to them the day before. And just like last year the Bats win it all. Warrior Lax-N-Nati is a Tournament of Champions Qualifying Event. The top teams in the High School A Division, U15 and U13 divisions will be invited to attend the Tournament of Champions - the High School Club Lacrosse National Championship.

Play started at 8:00 for the Bats on Sunday morning with a game against Team Indiana (with some of the coolest uniforms... lacrosse sticks rising from corn fields). Bats had a great game and won 9-2. The second game was against Tribe out of Indian Hills near Cincy. The Bats dominated play and won 16-1.

The BlueGrass Bats are gearing up for the 2010 season. Coach Pete Schroeder will be taking the helm this season and will be establishing his coaching staff to provide the best opportunities to enhance your lacrosse experience and recruiting possibilities. Pete Schroeder is in his 10th year of coaching boys high school lacrosse in Louisville, KY. He is the head coach at Trinity High School and the executive director of Rock Steady Lacrosse. Rock Steady Lacrosse is a new lacrosse instruction service for boys lacrosse players ages 12-18 in the Louisville area.
Tryouts are 3 days away - game times for the first tournament are posted.

It was a beautiful day - sunny at least. The first game was against Edge Jr. From their site: EDGE stands for the intangible qualities that separate elite lacrosse players from the rest. Play with Edge and become apart of a winning program that dedicates itself to the preparation and promotion of elite Canadian lacrosse players. Edge Lacrosse is looking to add several players to each of its four Field Lacrosse Recruiting Teams for the upcoming season. This year’s teams will consist of the top twenty student athletes at each age level from across Southern Ontario. EDGE is looking for student athletes who are serious about attending Preparatory College and or University in the U.S. on scholarship.

The bats late afternoon game was against the Tampa Tribe. Approaching its fourth season and based just north of Tampa, FL. Double overtime - great to watch.

Woke up to thunder and lightning - got everyone ready for rides and then the games were delayed because of rain. Our first game against FCA Maryland was at 10:00 instead of 8. Rain continued throughout the game -
The second game was against the Kanienkehaka Krunch from the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation. Rain had stopped, but the temperature dropped and winds picked up.
Because of the rain delay the last set of games had to be played under the lights -only 6 fields had lights so our last game was moved to 6:45 against Steel City Select - a Western Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association (WPSLA) sponsored team.
Not a great day for pictures - no real Internet connection at the resort - the rest of the games may not be up until we get back to Louisville -

Baltimore Elite Lacrosse Club (BELAX) is now in its 8th year and has been heralded as a premier club lacrosse program in the Baltimore Washington D.C. area. The club has assisted over 100 player’s attain their goals of playing for NCAA collegiate lacrosse programs and many more with academic scholarships by educating parents and players in the recruiting process. Snappers Lacrosse Club is being developed by Ryan Moran, Assistant Lacrosse Coach and former All-American at The University of Maryland, and Will Dalton, a University of Maryland Alum ’08 and former Team Captain. Coach Moran was formerly the Assistant Coach at The United States Naval Academy and a Head Coach at the Naval Academy Prep School. Coach Dalton was an undergraduate coach for the Terrapins in the 2009 season, and a member of the NLL/MLL professional lacrosse leagues.

Our goal is to operate a club lacrosse team comprised of select players within the Maryland region with a focus on individual player development, such as learning team offensive and defensive skills through practices and skill sessions. As a member of this club team, you will be afforded the opportunity to receive Division I and professional level coaching, practice at ACC caliber facilities at the University of Maryland, and participate in elite tournaments while obtaining the maximum level of lacrosse education in a fun and energetic atmosphere.

"An elite High School Lacrosse Club, based in Maryland, since 1998 Fireball have been playing in the Top High School recruiting tournaments on the East coast.
We do not have try-outs, our players are hand selected by our coaches friends and former Fireball players, or are sent to us by our friends whom coach at the high school level. We will accept a game tape from anyone whom believes they have what it takes to be a Fireball.

After several months off - the Bats traveled to Maryland to participate in the Beast of the East - the National Fall Invitational Tournament. Saturday's schedule change - an 11:00 game instead of 8:00 - worked to the Bats' advantage. They won their first game in sudden death. Good job Bats!

This was a great game - up..tie...down...tie...up...tie.... you get the idea - unfortunately time ran out. So Game 7 - Cherry Bomb ended up being the last game for the Bats in the tournament. Long ride home.

Sleeping Bear Dunes and more -

So - you have 12 boys in one house - what do you do? Wear them out. Drive west and after 40 minutes you come to Sleeping Bear Dunes - at one time over 250 feet high, erosion reduced the dunes to a little over 100 feet. But that is still enough.

You can read the legend of the sleeping bear if you want to know more -
After some climbing - it is more fun to come down. I recommend going to the picasa album and clicking forward for a flip book style. Return to Traverse City, see the sun set - grab some pizza and sleep tight.

I think the boys need to see the Great Dunes of Colorado - 700 feet tall... now that's a hike!

"There wasn’t any time to think about it.
Playing in his first seventh grade lacrosse game as a goalie, Joshua Slone found out right away why no one else on his Oldham County team wanted to guard the net. While Joshua stood his post, the Lexington Christian shooter found a seam, cocked his stick and unfurled a five-ounce solid-rubber ball at a speed that would have attracted the attention of a state trooper had it been a licensed vehicle.
BAM! The ball ricocheted off the side of Joshua’s helmet and he crumpled to the ground. “I got knocked out,” he said later. It was the start of a thrilling, punishing career.
Joshua, now a sophomore at Western Hills, first became interested in lacrosse as an 11-year-old, stumbling across the Virginia-Navy game on TV one summer day."

We started the morning playing playing against Edge USA. The Bats did a great job playing at an elite level. So - who is the Edge?

Stuart Brown of Edge Lacrosse, LLC, Ontario Canada, and George Kennedy of University Lacrosse, LLC, Baltimore Maryland, jointly announced today the formation of Edge USA Redshirts Lacrosse Club. “With the history, experience and support of our two organizations, Edge USA Redshirts is expected to emerge on the 2009 boy’s high-school club lacrosse scene as an immediate powerhouse” Brown was quoted today. The Redshirts and Edge Canada have a history of fierce competition and both organizations developed a deep loyalty for each other’s skill, mission and purpose.
The Bats did a great job this morning... they played hard and stayed in the game.

The boys came back to lose a close game against the Possums Orlando U19. Who are the Possums? The Florida Fightin' Possums is an elite lacrosse program in Florida for boys who desire to play in college. They are recognized as one of the top club lacrosse programs in the nation. Good job Bats -

Gait Cup - Third Game vs Alcatraz Outlaws

This afternoon we played The Alcatraz Outlaws. This team was formed with the goal of offering the 20 best lacrosse players in Northern California an elite lacrosse experience while gaining valuable collegiate exposure. The Outlaws were the champions of the 2009 King of the Hill Shootout last month. The bats lost - but what a great experience for the boys.

Play started early for some teams - games that were delayed because of storms started before the regular schedule. Even more interesting to the Bats - they had been moved to the Elite division. This proved challenging during the day - but what a great learning experience.
The first game was against Green Turtle Fells - an elite team made of from players from some of the premier programs in their state.

Gait Cup - First Game vs Mile High

After loading the bus at 11:30 pm and taking off at midnight, a cloud of bats descended on Gettysburg ready to play Wednesday afternoon. The bats were leading by one at the half... and the game continued to be close as play resumed. With 1 minute and 20 seconds left - the bats scored and the game was postponed due to lightning. Players left the field for 30 minutes, but heavy rains continued. When play was halted the bats were leading by one.

First game Thursday is at 8:00. I think there are some changes for the schedule on Thursday -

Hot! Hot! HOT! Thanks to the Destroyers for driving up for a day of lacrosse. The Bats were missing almost a dozen players - so thanks to the boys that were here for a great afternoon of play. There are a lot of photos - and these are only half of what I took.

The Bats will host two games with the D1 Destroyers from Nashville, Tennessee on June 27th beginning around 12:00 noon. We will host the Destroyers, a select team from the Nashville area. They feature many of the up and coming players from JPII, and Centennial High schools that are Division II in Tennessee as well as Brentwood and Franklin, Div. 1 teams. They also have a few select players from other programs that have played on travel teams in the past, from Ensworth and Father Ryan, along with a couple of rising Freshman, that are`proven players' and ready to take on the next level. We plan on playing two games which will be a great tune up game after Lax-N-ati and before our trek to Gettysburg.
